Living close to cell towers or cell phone antennas is hazardous to health. Prof. Girish Kumar, from the department of electrical engineering, IIT Bombay, explains that when mobile towers are situated within 160’ of one’s residence or office, it is like being in a microwave 24/7. A report on cell tower radiation has been submitted by Mr. Kumar to the telecommunication department.
He says, “It’s always saddening to see that US is not doing anything to remove toxins and environmental hazards for people.”
The exposure limits for Switzerland is 42mw/m sq, 100mw/m sq for Russia, 400mw/m sq for China, 3000mw/m sq for US and 4500mw/m sq for India.
According to some studies, a rise in cancer cases in a period of 5 to 10 years has been seen in countries like Germany, Australia, Brazil, Israel, etc. These countries have a radiation level higher than 1mw/m2. Cancer is the worst case scenario when it comes to being exposed to radiation. Before reaching this stage, people living near the phone towers complain about having headaches, memory loss, lack of concentration, fatigue, joint pains, vision distortion, sleep disturbances, miscarriages and heart problems.
However, these safety standards are applicable to an exposure of 6 minutes/day and not for people who are exposed to radiation 24 hours a day. An EMF of 4500mw/m2 is allowed according to the norms.
In order to protect yourself, make sure that you do not buy a home near a cell phone tower, even when it costs less. Have healthy food containing of high levels of antioxidants, take supplements and keep yourself hydrated to boost your health. Avoid using wireless devices like cell phones and use wired connections instead. Do not permit the cell phone companies to install cell phone antennas on the roofs of your children’s schools. Test your house for radiation if you live within a quarter to half a mile from a mobile tower. People who are unsatisfied should talk to the company installing the tower. If that doesn’t work, the case should be taken to the court. It should be ensured by the apartment owners Association or Resident Welfare Association (RWA) that service providers and property owners should gain the consent of people residing in the apartments before they put up a phone tower. Those who are living in areas that pose a risk to their health, should refuse to work or shop in such environments. People can pressurize the service providers to remove wireless devices from their work places, children’s schools and leisure places.
